2. Quarrel numbers
2.1
Epidemiology of tick-borne diseases
The sentinel network (INSERM / UPMC / INVS), which lists all cases of Lyme disease reported to the
knowledge, suggests about 26 300 cases in 2011 [1].
However, these figures are underestimated. Indeed, in some areas, no cases are identified by
Physicians Network.
On the other hand, for all epidemiological studies, case reporting guidelines require the
presence of erythema migrans [1-2]. However, many studies have shown that the rash is present
in about half the cases, which means therefore that there is actually at least twice
sick.
2.2
Ranking of Lyme disease in rare disease
In France , Lyme disease is still officially considered a rare disease [3].
However, for comparison with AIDS, highly publicized and monitored INVS identified 6265 new
cases of HIV infection in France in 2010, four times less than the number of cases of Lyme identified by
the same organization. The classification of Lyme disease in rare disease is no longer justified.
Due to this classification rare disease, some doctors do not consider Lyme disease as a
plausible diagnosis despite symptoms suggestive.
3. Prevention
According to a recent study in the Ile-de-France , less than 3% of the survey sample has enough
knowledge to be able to protect against ticks. [4] Indeed, many French
unaware of the dangers of ticks and few are those who can recognize the early symptoms of
Lyme disease (erythema migrans, flu syndrome out of the usual ...).
Yet prevention is simple to implement: inspection body following the removal of ticks
gestures secure ...
Actions should target users of the type (walkers, hikers, scouts, hunters, fishermen,
cyclists ...), not to mention the professional nature and / or contact with animals (loggers,
foresters, gamekeepers, guards fisheries, wildlife, veterinarians, animal scientists, farmers,
breeders ...).
Our association has printed and distributed 20,000 wafers in 2011 and twice in 2012, thanks to
donations and dedication of our volunteers.
We believe it is in the public interest that the state is involved in this prevention policy. A
Such an approach could result in the display of information boards at the entrance of forests and gardens
and public information campaigns, as there is for the flu, heart attacks, etc..
In the current state, people newly infected and previously unaware of the risk, are addressed
often our association to express their incomprehension at the lack of information from
government. Their anger is clearly expressed.
